Special Note: 18 gauge SPT cord, (commonly referred to as either "zip cord" or "lamp cord"), regardless if it's SPT-1 or SPT-2 designation, has a maximum rated amperage capacity of 10 amps, according to the manufacturers' data sheets. You may find other sources stating that SPT-1 is rated at 7 amps, while SPT-2 is rated at 10 amps. This is simply NOT correct! The insulation is essentially 50% thicker on SPT-2; at a nominal wall thickness of .048" as compared to SPT-1 at .033". The thickness of the insulation does not increase the maximum load capacity of the wire. A good rule of thumb is 8 amps for either SPT-1 or SPT-2. This also complies with the guidelines as stated in the National Electrical Code regarding the standard 80% load factor rule. |
